This is the classic paintball format. Two teams attempt to bring the opposing team's flag back to their own flag station without losing their own flag. There are many, many variations. This is a simplified version for recreational play.
Two teams are divided evenly. Each team receives a flag made of cloth, usually 2'-3' on a side. The teams begin at opposite sides of the field and their own flag base. The flag base should have a 3-4' rope tied between two structures (trees, buildings, or the like), about 6' off of the ground. The flag should be hung on this rope, and clearly visible from at least 2 compass points.
Capture the opposing flag by bringing it back to your flag base.
Play begins on a standard horn/whistle. Hit players are eliminated for the remainder of the game. If a player is shot while carrying the flag, he becomes neutral, and must hold the flag above his head until someone takes it from him. Players may return their own flag from the hit player directly to their station, or leave the flag in play where the player stands. Opposing players may grab the flag from the neutral player and continue the attempt to capture it.
The game ends immediately when a team touches their opponent's flag to their own flag base rope or when time expires.
The team that captures their opponent's flag wins. If one flag is in transit when time runs out, the team with their flag still hanging wins. If no flag is captured, or both flags are in transit at game end time, the team with the most players left is the winner.
Tactics will vary widley, depending on field size and player density. Most fields will be small enough that a team can control the entire width of the field, preventing anyone from sneaking in to steal the flag. (Theoretically...) If your flag is removed, focus all attention on eliminating the flag carrier.
